WHO Recommendations for Face Mask Usage:

  • Masks are effective only when used properly, which includes frequent and thorough hand washing with soap or alcohol-based hand sanitizers (hands must be washed before putting on a mask, among other times).

  • When putting on a mask, carefully cover your mouth and nose so that there are no gaps between the mask and your face.

  • Avoid touching the mask while wearing it; if you do touch it, wash your hands.

  • Replace the mask with a new one as soon as it becomes damp.

  • A used mask should be placed in a sealed container or bag and disposed of in a waste bin, or washed at a minimum temperature of 60°C. Hand hygiene is also recommended after removing the mask.

  • When removing the mask, do so by touching only the rear fasteners (elastic bands or ties), avoiding touching the front part of the mask—then wash your hands thoroughly.
